New Art Center presents: Cubism Workshop

May 22, 2021 @ 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm

$200

At about the same time as the invention of Cubism, Einstein was publishing his early papers on relativity; masks, artifacts and ritual objects from Africa were first exhibited in Paris, and the Eiffel Tower was new. Cubism was invented, in part, as a way of examining and painting stationary objects to incorporate what the object looks like as you move around it, i.e. from different perspectives. Cubism sought to incorporate time as the fourth dimension in the arts.

We’ll start with drawing still-lifes with charcoal, pencil, pen and ink, working from life rather than from Cubist drawings and paintings. Then we’ll begin the painting process using the earth tones of those early cubist paintings for the same reasons. First working out the structure with shapes and values, then bringing colors to it as we progress, much as the Cubists developed their plans. In the last session, we’ll work from a model, and we highlight painting in planes, breaking down curves into prism-like flat sides.
