*On Thursday, October 6th at 7:00 pm the Newton Free Library presents an Author Talk with Gish Jen on Thank You, Mr. Nixon. Join the acclaimed, award-winning author of The Resisters, Gish Jen, for a talk on her collection of short stories, Thank You, Mr. Nixon. The book takes measure of the fifty years since the opening of China and its unexpected effects on the lives of ordinary people. With their profound compassion and equally profound humor, these eleven linked stories trace the intimate ways in which humans make and are made by history, capturing an extraordinary era in an extraordinary way. *Come to The Allen Center on Friday, October 7th at 7:00 pm to celebrate its newest Artist in Residence, Allison-Yoshie Eldredge with the first performance of Cherry Street Players. This event is a fun and fanciful evening of music, history, and community described as “Classical with a twist.” Arrive at 7:00 pm to enjoy a pre-concert recital, refreshments, and historic Allen Center tours. The Cherry Street Players begin their program at 8:00 pm which will include the works of Mendelssohn, Schoenfield, and Piazzolla. Buy your tickets now for this event with a sweet twist.

*The Scandinavian Cultural Center hosts a film screening called Beware of Children on Saturday, October 8th at 1:30 pm. When crisis strikes we reveal our true colors. Beware of Children traces the dramatic aftermath of a tragic event in a middle-class suburb of Oslo. Tickets for Beware are available here.

*Join Historic Newton for Indigenous Peoples Day Newton as it celebrates and amplifies Indigenous voices on Monday, October 10th starting from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm at Albemarle Park. Stop by Historic Newton‘s booth to learn more about the history of the Native people of Newton.

*Watertown is also hosting its first Indigenous People’s Day with tons of events, including last year’s smash hit theatrical piece from NewRep Theatre Company called Listen to Sipu. The event takes place Monday, October 10th from 2:00 to 5:00 pm at First Parish Watertown, 35 Church St., Watertown.
